Tips for Choosing the Right Grit Spreader

    Group|Environmental 21/11/2017

Before choosing your winter safety equipment, you should first understand the requirements of the task at hand and the options available to you when purchasing a grit spreader

Manual Salt Spreaders are ideal for car parks, footpaths, driveways and pavements.  They make small to medium sized areas a lot easier to cover.  They are safer and more efficient in comparison to manually spreading salt with a shovel.

Towable Spreaders are ideal for local authorities, large industrial sites, hospitals, colleges and universities and Gladiator-ball.jpgcity centre pedestrian zones.  They provide coverage over larger areas where manual gritting would prove inefficient or dangerous.

Top Tips for Choosing the Right Salt Spreader

    1. Identify your gritting needs – what will you be using it for?
The nature, size and location of your business will have a big impact on the type of grit salt spreader you require.  Do you have a large parking area?  Are there many footpaths that visitors and staff use?  Manual salt spreaders are perfect for pedestrian areas such as footpaths, pavements and areas where vehicles are prohibited.  For larger areas including commercial car parks and entrance yards a towable gritter would be a more suitable choice.
    1. Note the distance between locations that require gritting
What sort of a distance is there between each gritting site?  Consider the area of each site that requires gritting, if the area is large and requires coverage quickly a larger towable spreader with an enhanced reach might be best to cover wide expanses with ease.
    1. Consider the resources available to undertake the task: people and vehicles
The number of people involved in the gritting process and the vehicles available are key details in deciding what equipment you should purchase.  If a vehicle is available to cover larger services a towable spreader would be the best option.  If you have a member of staff available to cover each area of your site some smaller manual spreaders might be best to use rather than towing the large spreader all over the site.

Broadcast spreading vs Drop Spreading – which is the best one?

The choice between spreading capabilities depends on two key factors; the size of the area needing covering and the amount of ground cover you want to achieve.  Manual gritters tend to use either drop spreading or broadcast spreading capabilities whereas towable spreaders often offer multi-functionality.

Broadcast spreading spreads grit salt over a wide area in a thin and consistent layer.  It is perfect for covering large areas quickly and the area that is covered is controlled by the speed that you move.

Drop spreading provides an accurate and consistent flow of salt at a defined width.  This method is perfect for covering a more specific area with a heavier layer of grit.
