Working at Height, Assessing Risks and Safety Checks

Assessing-Risks-at-Height.jpgIt is the law that employers and employees who control work at height follow The Work at Height Regulations to prevent death and injury caused by a fall from height.

Work at height must be properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people, using the right type of equipment. Before carrying out any job at height employers and those in control must first assess the risks.

To assess risks when working at height, simply answer the following question.
    • Can you prevent a fall from occurring?
    • Can you carry out some of the work from the ground using extendable tools and cables?
    • Can you minimise the distance and/or consequences of a fall?
    • Are you qualified to carry out the task?
    • Have inspection and maintenance checks of equipment been performed recently?
    • Are you feeling in good health and free from the effects of drugs/alcohol?
Gear should be inspected personally, before each use and at least once a year (or more frequently if required by the manufacturer), by a jobsite Competent Person.

If the answer to any of the above is no, contact your shift supervisor and do not start working.
